| lower octane fuel being less stable burns quicker resulting is a more complete burn during the limited duration of the powerstroke. A faster burn has the same benefit of advancing the timing without the losses associated with starting the burn deeper/earlier into the compression stroke. I've heard the term "over-octaned" used to refer to this issue And as a matter of observation my DD Altima always seems to love 85 octane over 87 when I get a chance to use it. (N/A KA24)
